Although each patient is evaluated based on his or her individual medical diagnosis, in general, a candidate for a rehabilitation hospital program must:

  • Be able to be managed safely in the rehabilitation setting.
  • Require medical supervision by a physiatrist, a licensed physician with specialized training and experience in medical rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrate, in the acute hospital, both the need for acute rehabilitation care and the potential to benefit from it.
  • Require the active and ongoing intervention of multiple therapy disciplines, one of which must be physical or occupational therapy.
  • Require an intensive rehabilitation program that generally consists of at least 3 hours of therapy per day at least 5 days per week. Patients may be accepted if therapy tolerance is limited to 15 hours over a 7-day period.
  • Require an intensive and coordinated interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation.
